Direct mail vs email marketing statistics 2026.

A prospecting letter costs $0.395 in postage at the USPS Marketing Mail automation rate effective 12 July 2026 (USPS Notice 123), and the only measured cold direct mail response rate anyone publishes is 1.0%, from JICMAIL's UK campaign tracker (JICMAIL, 2026). Put those together and a response costs $39.50 in postage, before you print anything. That's a US rate card on a UK response rate, because no measured US equivalent exists. An email costs $0.10 per thousand to deliver (Amazon SES, 2026) and gets clicked 1.69% of the time (Klaviyo, 2026), or $0.0059 per click. On media cost per response, email is roughly 6,700 times cheaper. On cost per acquired B2B customer, it's 1.7 times cheaper (First Page Sage, 2025). The distance between those two ratios is the whole argument.

This page collects direct mail vs email marketing statistics in one place: response rates, cost per piece and per send, cost per response, ROI, acquisition cost and engagement. Every number is sourced to its publisher, and four are computed here. Cite freely with a link.

What are the response rates for direct mail vs email marketing?

JICMAIL's measured UK campaign data puts cold direct mail at 1.0% and warm direct mail at 6.3%, against a global email campaign click rate of 1.69% and a flow click rate of 5.58%. The channels sit closer together than the folklore suggests, once you compare like with like.

The 4.4% direct mail response rate that half the internet quotes doesn't come from anywhere you can check. Every version I chased led to a roundup citing another roundup, or to an ANA report behind a membership wall I couldn't open, so no ANA figure appears on this page. The numbers I could verify are JICMAIL's, measured with matchback and tracking codes across 4,939 campaigns, and they say cold mail responds at 1%. They're also British, which is the honest caveat on every mail response rate here. Anyone selling you 4.4% is quoting house-file performance and calling it acquisition.

What does it cost to send one piece of mail or one email in 2026?

A commercial USPS Marketing Mail automation letter costs $0.395 in postage from 12 July 2026 and an email costs $0.0001 to deliver, a media cost ratio of 3,950 to 1 before either channel prints or designs anything.

Postage is the only piece of this comparison anybody publishes. Print is a quote, data is a quote, and mailhouse fees hide in a different budget line, so every all-in cost per piece you see quoted is somebody's estimate of their own job. Build yours from the USPS rate card up and you'll have the only defensible one in the room. Email has the mirror problem: SES delivery is a rounding error next to the ESP seat and the person writing the emails.

What is the cost per response for direct mail vs email?

Postage alone puts a cold direct mail response at $39.50 and a warm one at $6.27, while delivery alone puts an email click at $0.0059, so media cost per response differs by roughly 6,700 times on prospecting.

Postage or delivery only, print and platform fees excluded on both sides. The mail rows pair US postage with UK response rates, because nobody publishes a measured US one. Sources: USPS Notice 123 and USPS EDDM, 2026; Amazon SES, 2026; JICMAIL, 2026; Klaviyo, 2026.

One more number worth carrying: only 36% of prospecting mail gets read, so the postage on a single piece that reaches a human eye is $1.10, computed from the USPS Household Mail Survey and USPS Notice 123, 2026.

I've put these channels side by side on cost per response for years and the ratio always lands somewhere absurd, because it compares a physical object with a packet. What it's good for is sizing the test. If a mailing has to beat email on cost per response it never will; if it has to reach people email can't, postage is a fixed toll and the only question is whether those customers are worth $39.50 each.

Which channel has the better return on investment?

Warm direct mail returns £8.80 per £1 and cold mail £2.10 on measured UK campaign data, while 30% of marketing leaders put email at $36 to $50 per $1, which mostly tells you the two channels are measured on incompatible bases.

Two ROI numbers sit in this table: £8.80 back per £1 on measured UK mail campaigns, and $36 to $50 back per $1 from marketers answering a Litmus survey. One is matchback data, the other is what people believe about their own programme. Direct mail ROI usually nets out full production cost; email ROI usually counts the platform fee and stops. Never put them on one slide without saying which costs each includes.

What does it cost to acquire a customer through each channel?

Direct mail costs $864 to acquire a B2B customer and $347 for a B2C one, against $510 and $287 for email, so a gap that runs to thousands of times at the media level shrinks to 1.7x B2B and 1.2x B2C at the customer level.

These are a vendor's own numbers: an SEO agency reporting on roughly 120 of its client firms, from campaigns run between December 2021 and November 2024, with average lifetime value of $32,414 B2B and $10,089 B2C. First Page Sage says its B2C sample is smaller and skewed towards expensive financial, real estate and luxury products, so the B2C column is the softer half.

Milan's read

This table is why direct mail hasn't died. Email is 3,950 times cheaper per contact and only 1.7 times cheaper per customer, so a mailed response is worth hundreds of times more than an emailed click. Some of that is self-selection: people who reply to an envelope wanted it. Treat the levels as soft, though, because this is one agency's client book rather than a census. The ratio is the part worth carrying into a budget meeting.

How do people actually engage with mail and email?

Mail gets read at a much higher rate than email gets opened and holds attention for minutes rather than seconds: 64% of advertising mail from a known business is read, and the average item collects 141 seconds of attention over 28 days.

Compare a 31% open rate with a 50% reading rate and you're comparing an inflated number with a self-reported one. Apple's Mail Privacy Protection fires the pixel whether or not a person looks, so opens have been soft since 2021, and USPS reading rates come from households filling in a diary. Clicks and responses are the only figures here that need a human to do something on purpose.

How much email actually reaches the inbox?

One in six legitimate marketing emails never reaches the inbox: global inbox placement was 83.5% in Validity's most recent benchmark, with 6.7% filtered to spam and 9.8% missing.

How big are the two channels in 2026?

Volume down 1.3%, revenue up 2.3%: USPS is running the play Google runs on search, charging more for a shrinking amount of attention. Postage has outpaced volume decline for years, and another 4.8% increase landed in July 2026. If your mail programme only works at today's rate card, plan for it not to work in two years.

How we calculated the original numbers

Four figures here don't appear anywhere else. The arithmetic, so you can check it or swap the inputs:

  1. $39.50 postage per cold direct mail response. The Marketing Mail automation rate at 5-digit presort is $0.395 from 12 July 2026 (Notice 123). JICMAIL puts measured cold response at 1.0% across 4,939 UK campaigns. $0.395 ÷ 0.01 = $39.50. The house-list version is $0.395 ÷ 0.063 = $6.27. The two inputs come from different countries because no measured US response benchmark is published, so read this as a scale, not a quote. Postage only, so add print and data for a real number.
  2. $0.0059 per email click, and the 6,700x gap. Amazon SES lists $0.10 per 1,000 emails à la carte, or $0.0001 each. Klaviyo puts the average campaign click rate at 1.69% across 183,000 brands. $0.0001 ÷ 0.0169 = $0.0059. Against $39.50 that's 6,676 to 1. Per contact it's $0.395 ÷ $0.0001 = 3,950 to 1.
  3. 1.7x: the acquisition cost gap that matters. First Page Sage, an SEO agency publishing on about 120 of its own client firms, gives direct mail a B2B CAC of $864 against email's $510, a ratio of 1.69; for B2C it's $347 against $287, or 1.21. Set that beside the 3,950x media gap and the implied value of a mailed response is enormous.
  4. $109 of postage per US household per year. USPS FY2025 results give Marketing Mail revenue of $15,734 million on 56,756 million pieces, an average of $0.2772 each, up 3.6% on FY2024's $0.2675. The Household Mail Survey puts advertising mail at 393 pieces per household. 393 × $0.2772 = $108.95.

What the 2026 numbers actually say

The cheap channel and the expensive channel cost almost the same per customer. Email beats direct mail by 3,950 to 1 on cost per contact and roughly 6,700 to 1 on cost per response, then gives nearly all of it back once you count acquired customers, where the gap is 1.7x B2B and 1.2x B2C. Response quality, not media price, decides this comparison.

Nobody publishes a checkable US direct mail response rate any more. The number everyone quotes traces back to ANA's Response Rate Reports, and both recent editions now sit behind a membership wall, so nothing from them appears on this page. The only measured campaign-level benchmark I could verify is JICMAIL's, and it's British. Mail in the US and you're benchmarking against folklore or against somebody else's country.

House file or don't bother. Every source here splits the same way. USPS: a 64% reading rate for mail from an existing supplier against 36% for prospecting mail, and 25% of pieces rated a very likely response against 3%. JICMAIL: 6.3% warm against 1.0% cold. Klaviyo says it in email's dialect, flows clicking at 5.58% against 1.69%. The channel argument is a distraction; the list is the variable.

FAQ

Does direct mail get a better response rate than email?

On a like-for-like basis, no. Measured cold direct mail responds at 1.0% and warm mail at 6.3% in JICMAIL's UK campaign tracker (2026), against email campaign clicks of 1.69% and flow clicks of 5.58% (Klaviyo, 2026). The claim that mail beats email by many multiples compares mail to a house file with cold email to a bought list, which isn't a fair pairing.

How much does direct mail cost per piece in 2026?

A commercial USPS Marketing Mail automation letter costs $0.255 to $0.467 in postage depending on presort, with 5-digit presort at $0.395, effective 12 July 2026 (USPS Notice 123). Every Door Direct Mail Retail costs $0.26 a piece. Printing and data sit on top, and USPS raised mailing services prices 4.8% in July 2026.

What is the cost per response for direct mail vs email?

Postage alone puts a cold direct mail response at $39.50 and a warm one at $6.27; delivery alone puts an email click at $0.0059. That's a media-cost gap of roughly 6,700 to 1, computed from USPS 2026 postage rates, Amazon SES pricing, JICMAIL's UK response rates and Klaviyo click rates. Both sides exclude creative, data and platform costs.

Which channel has a lower customer acquisition cost?

Email, but by less than you'd expect: $510 against direct mail's $864 for B2B, and $287 against $347 for B2C (First Page Sage, June 2025, a vendor reporting on about 120 of its own client firms). Direct mail's CAC also beats content marketing at $1,254 and trade shows at $1,390 in the same table, which is why high-volume mailers keep funding it.

How much advertising mail does a US household get?

US households received an average of 393 advertising mail pieces in 2025, down 40% from 659 in 2015 (USPS Household Mail Survey FY2025, filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission). Advertising is 62% of all household mail. At the FY2025 average postage of $0.277 a piece, that's about $109 per household per year.

What percentage of marketing emails reach the inbox?

83.5% of legitimate marketing emails reached the inbox in Validity's most recent benchmark, with 6.7% filtered to spam and 9.8% missing, so about one in six never arrives. Placement varies sharply by provider, from Gmail's 87.2% to Microsoft's 75.6%.

Methodology. Numbers were collected in September 2026 and re-checked in an independent QA pass against the original publisher's page, report or filing, not against other statistics roundups. USPS figures come from the April 2026 price filing, the FY2025 financial results and the FY2025 Household Mail Survey filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission. Vendor benchmarks appear only where the publisher states a sample: Klaviyo (183,000 brands), JICMAIL (4,939 campaigns, 10,109 mail items), Lob (250 senior leaders), Litmus (nearly 500 professionals), HubSpot (3,400+ marketers), Validity (its own inbox placement panel) and First Page Sage (about 120 of its own client firms, so read the CAC table as vendor data). The widely circulated 4.4% direct mail response rate was excluded because it couldn't be traced to a readable primary source. No figure from ANA's 2023 or 2025 Response Rate Reports appears here either: both sit behind ANA membership and neither could be read to check. The Campaign Monitor benchmark covers 2021 and is labelled dated where used. Response, ROI and attention benchmarks for mail are UK campaign data from JICMAIL, because no comparable measured US dataset is published; every cost, volume and household figure is US, and the page says so wherever the two are combined.
