How many searches does Google handle compared with ChatGPT prompts?
Google handles about 13.7 billion searches a day and ChatGPT about 2.5 billion prompts, which makes ChatGPT's raw prompt count roughly 18% of Google's raw search count, and 12% once you keep only the prompts that resemble a search.

| Google handles about 13.7 billion searches a day, derived from Google's own disclosure of more than 5 trillion searches a year in January 2025. | Google via Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| ChatGPT handles about 2.5 billion prompts a day, from OpenAI's July 2025 internal figure. | OpenAI via Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| 65% of ChatGPT usage qualifies as search-comparable. That is Ahrefs' own classification of the 1.5 million conversations studied by OpenAI and Harvard researchers, who counted 24% as pure search. It leaves 1.625 billion search-like prompts a day. | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| ChatGPT's search-comparable volume equals 12% of Google's search volume. | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| Only 34.5% of ChatGPT queries had web search active in February 2026, down from 46% in late 2024, measured on a clickstream panel of 200 million US users. | Semrush, 2026 |
| When ChatGPT does search, it issues 1.78 search queries per prompt on average, and 75% of prompts trigger exactly two. | Ahrefs, August 2025 |
| ChatGPT weekly active users grew 8x between October 2023 and April 2025 and passed 800 million. | OpenAI via Semrush, 2025 |
| Monthly web visits across generative AI platforms grew 70% year over year to 9.5 billion between June 2025 and May 2026. | Similarweb, 2026 |
The 12% figure everyone repeats is the most generous honest version of this comparison. Ahrefs counts any prompt that looks like information seeking, including the ones ChatGPT answers from memory without touching a website. Filter to prompts that run a live web search and ChatGPT is at 6.3% of Google's daily volume, a share that is falling because the search-enabled rate dropped from 46% to 34.5% in fifteen months.
How much traffic does ChatGPT send to websites compared with Google?
Google sends 190 times more traffic to websites than ChatGPT, taking 39.98% of all referral traffic against ChatGPT's 0.21%, according to Ahrefs' February 2026 analysis of 76,000 sites.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| Google sends 190x more traffic to websites than ChatGPT, measured across 76,000 websites. | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| Google accounts for 39.98% of referral traffic; ChatGPT accounts for 0.21%. | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| Google's estimated click-through rate is 29.2% against ChatGPT's 1.3%, a 96% difference. | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| AI referral traffic grew 9.7x in a year across 81,947 websites, while average search traffic to those same sites fell about 21%. | Ahrefs, June 2025 |
| AI referrals still make up only 0.25% of the average site's total traffic. | Ahrefs, June 2025 |
| More than 80% of all AI referral traffic comes from ChatGPT. | Ahrefs, June 2025 |
| ChatGPT's outbound referral traffic to the rest of the web grew 206% between January 2025 and January 2026. | Semrush, 2026 |
| ChatGPT referred traffic to about 170,000 unique domains in February 2026, down from a peak of about 260,000 in October 2025. | Semrush, 2026 |
| AI tools send out less than 1% of all web traffic. | SparkToro, June 2026 |
Two numbers in this table do the real work, and they point in opposite directions. AI referrals grew 9.7x while search traffic to the same sites fell 21%, so the thing growing fastest is also the thing that cannot replace what is shrinking. A tenfold rise on 0.02% of your traffic does not pay for a 21% fall on 40% of it. The domain count is the part I would watch: ChatGPT reached 260,000 unique domains in October 2025 and 170,000 four months later, which means its referrals are concentrating on fewer sites even as the total grows.
How do people use ChatGPT differently from a Google search?
People use ChatGPT for longer, more conversational requests than they type into Google: search-enabled ChatGPT prompts average 8.7 words and prompts without search average 13.5 words, against the two to four words typical of a Google query.

| 42% of US adults use chatbots to search for information, while 51% never use a chatbot at all. | Pew Research Center, June 2026 |

| Practical guidance, seeking information and writing account for nearly 80% of ChatGPT conversations. | NBER, September 2025 |
| Search-enabled ChatGPT prompts averaged 8.7 words in January to February 2026; prompts without search averaged 13.5 words. Search prompts nearly doubled in length year over year while non-search prompts nearly halved. | Semrush, 2026 |
| The share of ChatGPT prompts written in traditional keyword language nearly doubled from 18.9% in October 2025 to 34.9% in February 2026. | Semrush, 2026 |
The prompt-length split is the most useful behavioural finding here, and almost nobody quotes it. When ChatGPT decides to search the web, the prompt behind it is short and keyword-shaped. When it answers from memory, the prompt is long and conversational. So the queries that can send you a click look more like Google queries every month, which is good news for anyone who has been told to throw out their keyword research. The Pew number I keep coming back to is 51%: half of American adults have still never used a chatbot.
Do ChatGPT citations overlap with Google's top rankings?
ChatGPT citations barely overlap Google's rankings. Only 8.00% of ChatGPT's in-text citations appear in Google's top 10, from Ahrefs' August 2025 test of 15,000 long-tail prompts. The results ChatGPT's own searches return overlap even less, at 6.82% across 118,931 fan-out queries.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| 6.82% of the search results ChatGPT retrieves appear in Google's top 10 for the originating prompt, 9.85% in the top 20, and 83.39% appear nowhere in Google's results. Based on 118,931 fan-out queries. | Ahrefs, August 2025 |
| On short-tail queries, ChatGPT's URL overlap with Google's top 10 is 10.00% while its domain overlap is 31.80%, so ChatGPT cites ranking domains about three times more often than ranking pages. Based on 3,311 queries. | Ahrefs, September 2025 |
| Only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appear in Google's top 10 for the same prompt, across 15,000 long-tail queries. | Ahrefs, August 2025 |
| Perplexity overlaps Google's top 10 at 28.6%, the highest of any assistant tested, while ChatGPT's in-text citations overlap at 8.0%. | Ahrefs, August 2025 |
| 76% of Google AI Overview citations come from pages already in Google's own top 10, a far tighter coupling than any standalone assistant. | Ahrefs, August 2025 |
| Pages ChatGPT cites rank in Google positions 21 or worse almost 90% of the time. | Semrush, July 2025 |
| Citations appeared in about 6.8% of US ChatGPT prompts by May 2026, up from about 1.6% in June 2025. | Similarweb, 2026 |
This is the section that should change what you do on Monday. Ranking in Google's top 10 buys you a 76% chance of being quoted inside an AI Overview and roughly an 8% chance of being cited by ChatGPT. Those are different games with different rules, and the second one rewards pages that Google's ranking systems have not promoted. It also means the standard advice, rank well and the AI citations follow, is measurably wrong for ChatGPT and measurably right for AI Overviews. Read our generative engine optimization statistics for what the citation side looks like across all assistants.
Is ChatGPT traffic worth more than Google organic traffic?
Per visitor, yes: Semrush measured the average AI search visitor as worth 4.4 times the average traditional organic search visitor in July 2025, and Ahrefs reported in November 2025 that AI assistant traffic produced 12% of its signups from 0.5% of its traffic.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| The average AI search visitor is worth 4.4x the average traditional organic search visitor on a conversion basis, across more than 500 marketing and SEO topics. | Semrush, July 2025 |
| AI assistant traffic produced 12% of signups to Ahrefs while accounting for 0.5% of its traffic, from the company's own analytics. | Ahrefs, November 2025 |
| Semrush projects that AI search could send more visitors to websites than traditional search by early 2028, and sooner if Google makes AI Mode the default. | Semrush, July 2025 |
| ChatGPT's estimated click-through rate of 1.3% sits 96% below Google's estimated 29.2%, so higher per-visit value starts from a far smaller base. | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
The 4.4x number is real and it is also the most abused statistic in this category. It is a per-visitor multiplier on a channel that delivers a fraction of a percent of visitors, and both vendors reporting it sell software to the people reading it. Run the multiplication first: 4.4x value on 0.5% of traffic is about 2.2% of the value of your organic search programme.
What is AI search doing to publisher and reference traffic?
Zero-click searches rose to 68.01% of US Google searches in early 2026 from 60.45% in 2024, Wikipedia lost about 8% of its human pageviews year over year, and publishers report traffic declines between 20% and 60%.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024 and about 45% in 2016. | SparkToro / Similarweb, June 2026 |
| For every 1,000 US Google searches in July 2024, 360 clicks went to the open web, meaning sites that are neither Google-owned nor a Google ad. The EU figure was 374. At 26 months this is the oldest number on the page. | SparkToro / Datos, July 2024 |
| Wikipedia's human pageviews fell about 8% in mid 2025 against the same months of 2024, after the Wikimedia Foundation reclassified bot traffic it had counted as human. | Wikimedia Foundation, October 2025 |
| Publishers report traffic declines in the range of 20% to 60%, with smaller publishers hit hardest. | Wikimedia Foundation, July 2026 |
| Average search traffic across 81,947 websites fell about 21% in a year. | Ahrefs, June 2025 |
Wikipedia is the cleanest natural experiment we have, because it has no commercial incentive to overstate the damage and it publishes its own traffic data. An 8% drop, stated after the Foundation corrected its own bot counting in the direction that made the number worse, is more credible to me than any vendor study on this page. The point for marketers: the click loss is not ChatGPT taking your visitors, it is Google answering more queries itself, a much larger and much older effect.
How we calculated the original numbers
Four figures on this page do not appear anywhere else. Here is the arithmetic, so you can check it or swap the inputs.
- 21x: open-web clicks per 1,000 queries, Google against ChatGPT. SparkToro and Datos measured 360 open-web clicks per 1,000 US Google searches in July 2024. SparkToro's June 2026 update reports that the share of searches producing any click fell 22.9%, which puts open-web clicks at roughly 278 per 1,000 searches (360 x 0.771). Ahrefs estimates ChatGPT's click-through rate at 1.3% across every link in a search-classified prompt, which is 13 clicks per 1,000 of those prompts. 278 divided by 13 is 21.4. Counting all ChatGPT usage instead, Ahrefs' 0.84% rate puts the gap at about 33 to 1. One caveat worth stating: SparkToro's 22.9% decline covers clicks of every kind, including clicks to Google's own properties, so 278 is an estimate rather than a measurement.
- 6.3%: ChatGPT's web-touching volume as a share of Google's. ChatGPT handles 2.5 billion prompts a day (OpenAI, July 2025) and Semrush's 200-million-user panel found 34.5% of ChatGPT queries had web search active in February 2026. That is 862 million prompts a day that reach the live web, or 6.3% of Google's 13.7 billion daily searches. The widely quoted 12% counts search-like intent; this counts search-like behaviour.
- 31 ChatGPT citations equal one #1 Google ranking. First Page Sage puts the #1 organic click-through rate at 39.8% in its May 2025 report. Ahrefs estimates that 1.3% of search-classified ChatGPT prompts produce a click on any cited link. 39.8 divided by 1.3 is 30.6, so at equal query volume you need about 31 ChatGPT citations to generate the clicks of a single top Google ranking. Because that 1.3% covers every link in an answer rather than one of them, 31 is a floor. The comparison also ignores conversion quality, which favours ChatGPT by roughly 4.4x on Semrush's numbers, so call it seven citations per ranking on a revenue basis.
- 93% of what ChatGPT retrieves does not rank in Google's top 10. Ahrefs found 6.82% overlap between the results ChatGPT's own searches return and Google's top 10 across 118,931 fan-out queries in August 2025. 100 minus 6.82 is 93.18. On head terms the same team measured 10% overlap and ChatGPT's in-text citations overlapped at 8.00%, so the honest range is 90% to 93% depending on what you count.
What the 2026 numbers say
The volume gap is closing and the traffic gap is not. ChatGPT sits at 12% of Google's search-comparable volume and 0.5% of its referral share. Those two ratios are more than twenty times apart, and that distance is the story of AI search in 2026. Attention moved first; clicks have not followed, because ChatGPT is built to answer rather than to forward.
Citation is a separate discipline from ranking, and the data now proves it. An 8% overlap between what ChatGPT cites and what Google ranks is not noise, it is a different retrieval system with different preferences. Google's own AI Overviews pull 76% from its top 10, so the two AI surfaces you care about require opposite strategies: keep ranking for Google's summaries, and earn mentions on sources ChatGPT trusts for its own.
Do the multiplication before you move budget. A 4.4x per-visitor value on 0.5% of traffic is a rounding error on your revenue and a real signal about intent. Build for the citation, measure it honestly, and keep the SEO programme that still pays the bills intact. The full set of pages is in the statistics hub.
FAQ
How much of Google's search volume does ChatGPT have?
ChatGPT has 12% of Google's search volume, according to Ahrefs' February 2026 analysis, which compares Google's 13.7 billion daily searches with the 65% of ChatGPT's 2.5 billion daily prompts that qualify as search-comparable. Counting only prompts where ChatGPT runs a live web search, the figure is 6.3%, computed from Semrush's finding that 34.5% of queries had search active in February 2026.
Does ChatGPT send more traffic than Google?
No. Google sends 190 times more traffic to websites than ChatGPT, taking 39.98% of referral traffic against ChatGPT's 0.21% across 76,000 sites (Ahrefs, February 2026). Per 1,000 queries, Google delivers about 278 open-web clicks and ChatGPT about 13.
How many people use ChatGPT for search?
42% of US adults use AI chatbots to search for information, and 44% use ChatGPT specifically, according to Pew Research Center's survey of 5,119 US adults in February 2026. Half of American adults, 51%, still never use a chatbot at all.
Do ChatGPT citations match Google's top rankings?
Rarely. Ahrefs measured ChatGPT's in-text citations at 8.00% overlap with Google's top 10 in August 2025, and the results ChatGPT's own searches return at 6.82%, with 83.39% appearing nowhere in Google's results across 118,931 fan-out queries. Google's own AI Overviews are the opposite: 76% of their citations come from Google's top 10.
Is ChatGPT traffic better quality than Google organic traffic?
Per visitor, yes. Semrush measured the average AI search visitor as worth 4.4 times a traditional organic search visitor in July 2025, and Ahrefs reported 12% of its signups coming from 0.5% of its traffic. The base is tiny, so the total value remains a small fraction of organic search.
Will ChatGPT overtake Google search?
Not on current measurement. Google holds 91.1% of worldwide search engine market share as of August 2026 (StatCounter) and sends 190 times more traffic than ChatGPT (Ahrefs, February 2026). Semrush projects AI search could send more visitors than traditional search by early 2028, a forecast rather than a measurement, and one that depends on Google making AI Mode the default.

Methodology. Numbers were collected in September 2026 and checked against the original publisher's page, not against other statistics roundups. Vendor claims without a stated sample or method were excluded. Where a vendor sells software to the audience for its own statistic, the page says so. Where two credible measurements disagree, as with ChatGPT's 6.82% and 10.00% overlap with Google's top 10, both are shown with their query type and sample. Last updated 20 September 2026.
