How much traffic comes from organic vs paid search?
Organic search sends roughly 290 clicks to the open web per 1,000 US Google searches in 2026; paid ads account for about 1 in every 100 Google clicks.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| For every 1,000 US Google searches in 2024, 374 clicks went to the open web, meaning a site that is neither Google-owned nor a Google ad. In the EU it was 360. | SparkToro / Datos, July 2024 |
| Paid search ads received about 1% of all US Google clicks in 2024. Google itself stated in 2023 that fewer than 20% of searches show any ad. | SparkToro / Datos, 2024 |
| Almost 30% of all clicks after a US Google search go to Google-owned properties such as YouTube, Maps, Images and Flights. | SparkToro / Datos, 2024 |
| The share of US Google searches that produce any click at all (to Google properties, ads or the open web) fell 9.51 percentage points between 2024 and Jan to Apr 2026, a 22.9% decline, while paid clicks grew. | SparkToro / Similarweb, June 2026 |
| 96.55% of all pages in Ahrefs' 14-billion-page index get zero traffic from Google. | Ahrefs, 2023 |
| Organic search drove 53.3% of trackable website traffic and paid search 15% in BrightEdge's channel study. Organic social sat at 5%. | BrightEdge, 2019 |
| Google holds 91.1% of worldwide search engine market share; Bing holds 4.5%. | StatCounter, August 2026 |
The BrightEdge 53% figure is the most quoted number in this category and it is seven years old. Nobody has published a comparable cross-industry channel split since, so treat it as a ceiling from a pre-AI-Overview world, not a current benchmark. The SparkToro clickstream numbers are the closest thing we have to a 2026 replacement, and they describe a smaller pie.
How do organic and paid click-through rates compare?
The #1 organic result earns 19 times the click-through rate of the top paid ad on the same page, and the top three organic results together take almost 12 times the clicks of all four ad slots combined.
| Position | Organic CTR | Paid CTR |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 39.8% | 2.1% |
| 2 | 18.7% | 1.4% |
| 3 | 10.2% | 1.3% |
| 4 | 7.2% | 1.1% |
| 5 | 5.1% | n/a |
| 10 | 1.6% | n/a |

|---|---|
| The top 3 organic results receive 68.7% of all clicks on a Google result page. | First Page Sage, 2025 |
| Backlinko's analysis of 4 million results puts the #1 organic CTR at 27.6%, ten times the #10 result, with the top 3 taking 54.4% of clicks. | Backlinko, updated April 2025 |
| Only 0.63% of searchers click anything on page two of Google. | Backlinko, 2025 |
| Moving from #2 to #1 lifts relative CTR by 74.5%. Title tags of 40 to 60 characters earn 33.3% higher CTR than titles outside that range. | Backlinko, 2025 |
| The average click-through rate on a Google search ad, measured inside the ad platform, is 6.64% in 2026. | WordStream, 2026 |
| A featured snippet has the highest CTR of any element on the page at 42.9%; an AI Overview link in first position earns 38.9%. | First Page Sage, 2025 |
Two CTR figures for ads sit on this page, 2.1% and 6.64%, and both are right. First Page Sage measures clicks across every search where the ad slot exists. WordStream measures clicks only on searches where an advertiser's ad actually showed, from inside the ad account. Different denominators, different numbers. When you compare organic and paid, use the same denominator, which is why the position table above is the fair comparison.
What does paid search cost in 2026, and what does SEO cost?
A Google Ads click costs $5.42 on average in 2026 and a lead costs $66.69; a typical SEO retainer runs $2,917 a month and takes three to six months to show results.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| Average Google Ads CPC across 23 industries is $5.42 in 2026, from 13,474 campaigns running April 2025 to March 2026. | WordStream, 2026 |
| Average CPC has more than doubled in ten years, from $2.32 in 2016 to $5.42 in 2026. | WordStream, 2026 |
| Average cost per lead is $66.69, up only 13% from $59.18 in 2016, and 2026 is the first year CPL fell year over year since before 2020. | WordStream, 2026 |
| Attorneys and Legal Services pay the most per click ($9.87) and per lead ($131.63). Arts and Entertainment pay the least ($1.63 and $26.84). | WordStream, 2026 |
| Conversion rate from search ads rose in 87% of industries in 2026. | WordStream, 2026 |
| SEO costs $2,917 a month on average; agencies average $3,209 and freelancers $1,349. The most common retainer band is $501 to $1,000, charged by 20.4% of providers. | Ahrefs survey of 439 providers, 2024 |
| The average SEO hourly rate is $111; 78.2% of SEO providers work on a monthly retainer. | Ahrefs, 2024 |
| SEO typically takes three to six months to show results, according to a poll of 3,680 marketers. | Ahrefs, 2024 |
CPC doubled in a decade while cost per lead barely moved. That means conversion rates absorbed almost all of the click inflation, which is a compliment to advertisers and landing pages, not to Google's pricing. It also means the next CPC increase has nowhere to hide.
Which converts better, organic or paid search?
Paid search converts slightly better than organic search in 2026, 5.4% against 4.9%, but Google's own model prices an organic click at 70% of a paid one, which makes organic the cheaper conversion by a wide margin.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| Organic search traffic converts at 4.9% and paid search at 5.4%, against a 5.13% all-channel average, from 110 million sessions and 5 million conversions. | Ruler Analytics, May 2026 |
| The average conversion rate measured inside Google Ads is 8.18% in 2026. | WordStream, 2026 |
| Google claims advertisers make $8 in profit for every $1 spent on Google Ads. The model assumes $2 of profit per $1 from paid clicks, plus organic clicks valued at 70% of a paid click's commercial value. | Google Economic Impact methodology, 2025 |
| At the 2026 average CPC of $5.42, Google's own 70% assumption prices an organic click at $3.79. | Computed from Google Economic Impact and WordStream |
Read the $8 claim carefully. Three quarters of it is Google assigning value to the free clicks its search engine sends you anyway. Strip the organic part out and the paid return Google itself claims is $2 per $1, which is a fine business, not a miracle.
How are zero-click searches and AI Overviews changing the split?
Zero-click searches rose from 60.45% of US Google searches in 2024 to 68.01% in early 2026, and three independent studies put the click loss on searches with an AI Overview between 35% and 61%.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. | SparkToro / Similarweb, June 2026 |
| Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits to result pages with an AI summary, against 15% of visits without one. They clicked a source inside the summary on 1% of visits. | Pew Research Center, July 2025 |
| Users ended their browsing session entirely after 26% of result pages with an AI summary, against 16% of pages without one. | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| The #1 organic result had a 34.5% lower CTR when an AI Overview was present, across 300,000 keywords. 99.2% of keywords that trigger an AI Overview are informational. | Ahrefs, April 2025 |
| Ahrefs reran the same 300,000-keyword study in February 2026 (December 2023 vs December 2025) and found the presence of an AI Overview now correlates with a 58% lower CTR for the top-ranking page. | Ahrefs, February 2026 |
| Organic CTR on AI Overview queries fell 61% (1.76% to 0.61%) and paid CTR fell 68% (19.7% to 6.34%) between June 2024 and September 2025, across 3,119 queries at 42 organisations. | Seer Interactive via Search Engine Land, 2025 |
| By February 2026 organic CTR on AI Overview queries had recovered to 2.4% from a 1.3% floor in December 2025. Brands cited inside the AI Overview earn 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands that are not. | Seer Interactive, April 2026 |
| AI Overviews trigger on 95.4% of comparison queries, 85.9% of question queries and 27.3% of single-word queries. | Seer Interactive, 2026 |
| 18% of US Google searches produced an AI summary in March 2025; 60% of searches that started with who, what, when or why did. | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Only 0.34% of US searches reached Google's AI Mode in January to April 2026, though Google said at I/O 2026 that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users. | SparkToro / Similarweb, 2026 |
| For US news publishers, zero-click searches grew from 56% to 69% between May 2024 and May 2025, and organic traffic to news sites fell 26%. | Similarweb, 2025 |
Ahrefs, Pew and Seer measured different things with different methods and landed at a 35% to 61% click loss on AI Overview queries, and Ahrefs' own rerun moved from 35% to 58% in nine months. That spread is the answer. Anyone quoting one precise number for "the AI Overview effect" picked the study that suited them. What the three agree on matters more: informational queries lose the most, and getting cited inside the overview is now worth more than ranking under it.
How much money moves through search advertising?
US search advertising took $114.2 billion in 2025 and Google's search revenue grew 13% to $224.5 billion, in the same two years that organic clicks to the open web fell 23%.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| US search advertising revenue reached $114.2 billion in 2025, up 11%, or 38.8% of all digital ad revenue. | IAB / PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report, April 2026 |
| Social media advertising overtook search for the first time in 2025 at $117.7 billion, up 32.6%. Total US digital ad revenue hit $294.6 billion. | IAB / PwC, 2026 |
| Google Search & other revenue was $224.5 billion in 2025, up from $198.1 billion in 2024 and $175.0 billion in 2023. | Alphabet Form 10-K, filed February 2026 |
| Marketing budgets held flat at 7.7% of company revenue in 2025. Paid media took 31% of marketing budget, up from about 28%, in a survey of roughly 400 CMOs. | Gartner CMO Spend Survey, May 2025 |
| Paid search is the largest single line in digital marketing budgets at 13.9% of digital spend, ahead of display (12.5%) and social (12.2%). | Gartner CMO Spend Survey, 2025 |
| 29.5% of internet users worldwide and 32.5% of Americans use an ad blocker at least sometimes, about 1.77 billion people. | GWI Q2 2025, via Backlinko |
Two things grew at the same time: Google's search revenue, by 13%, and the share of searches that send nobody anywhere, by 7.5 points. Those are not in tension. Fewer free clicks make the remaining paid ones more valuable, which is exactly what you would build if you owned the results page.
Do organic and paid search work better together?
The best evidence says yes, and the mechanism is visibility rather than magic: brands that appear in both organic results and paid slots, or that are cited inside an AI Overview, earn disproportionately more clicks than brands that appear in one place.
| Statistic | Source |
|---|---|
| Brands cited inside an AI Overview earn 120% more organic clicks per impression, and their paid CTR held between 13.99% and 17.95% through 2025, more than 4 points above uncited brands. | Seer Interactive, 2026 |
| Uncited brands on transactional queries with an AI Overview saw organic CTR fall from 4.17% to 2.15%. | Seer Interactive, 2026 |
| Google's own advertiser return model only reaches $8 per $1 by counting organic and paid clicks together. | Google Economic Impact, 2025 |
| On the question of running brand ads when you already rank #1, one r/PPC practitioner reported that strong SEO plus brand ads means paid cannibalises some organic clicks, and still recommended running them because two listings above the fold beat one. | r/PPC thread, 2021 |
| Practitioners describe the workflow loop as: paid campaigns (especially broad match) surface converting keywords for organic content, and Search Console surfaces cheap organic queries worth bidding on. | r/PPC thread, 2021 |
| One marketer reported a 30% traffic drop on a site in June 2024 and traced it to AI Overviews replacing results for many of its keywords. | r/marketing thread, June 2024 |
The practitioner threads are anecdotes, and I include them because they say what the studies cannot: what a marketer did next. In all three threads the answer was the same: nobody switched channels, they added a second listing.
How we calculated the original numbers
Four figures on this page do not appear anywhere else. Here is the arithmetic, so you can check it or change the inputs.
- $1,560 of paid-equivalent organic traffic per 1,000 US searches. SparkToro's 2024 clickstream found 374 open-web clicks per 1,000 US searches, where open web means sites that are neither Google-owned nor paid ads. Their 2026 update reports that searches producing any click fell 22.9% while paid clicks grew, which means organic open-web clicks fell by at least 22.9%. Applying that decline as a conservative floor leaves about 288 organic open-web clicks per 1,000 searches in early 2026 (374 x 0.771). Multiplied by WordStream's 2026 average CPC of $5.42 gives $1,561. This is a valuation, and probably a generous one, not a claim that you could buy those exact clicks, since many organic queries show no ads at all.
- 11.6x: top 3 organic vs all 4 ad slots. First Page Sage's 2025 table gives the top three organic results 68.7% of clicks. Its four ad positions sum to 2.1 + 1.4 + 1.3 + 1.1 = 5.9%. 68.7 / 5.9 = 11.6.
- $3.79: Google's implied price of an organic click. Google's Economic Impact methodology values an organic click at 70% of a paid click's commercial value. 70% of the 2026 average CPC ($5.42) is $3.79.
- 35% to 61%: the AI Overview click tax. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% CTR drop at position 1 in April 2025 and 58% in its February 2026 rerun; Pew measured a fall from 15% to 8% of visits with a click, which is a 47% relative drop; Seer measured a 61% fall in organic CTR. Three methods, one direction.
What the 2026 numbers actually say
Organic still wins the click, by a lot, and the gap is not closing. Nineteen to one at position 1, twelve to one across the top of the page. Every study since 2019 that compares the two on the same page lands in the same place. The people who click ads are a small, high-intent minority, which is why they convert at 5.4% and why advertisers keep paying $5.42 for them.
The fight has moved from "organic or paid" to "clicked or not clicked". A 7.5-point rise in zero-click searches in two years is the largest shift in this dataset. It hits informational content first and hardest, it hits organic and paid alike on AI Overview queries, and it is the reason Google's revenue and the open web's traffic can move in opposite directions without contradiction.
Being cited beats being ranked. Seer's 120% figure is the number I would put on a slide. A brand named inside the AI Overview keeps its clicks; a brand ranked underneath it loses roughly half. The playbook for 2027 is not organic vs paid. It is organic, paid, and cited, and the third one is where the compounding now happens.
FAQ
What percentage of clicks go to organic vs paid search results?
Paid ads receive about 1% of all Google clicks in the US, because fewer than 20% of searches show an ad, according to SparkToro and Datos (2024). On a results page where ads do appear, the top organic result earns 39.8% CTR and the top ad earns 2.1% (First Page Sage, 2025).
Is organic search cheaper than paid search?
Per click, yes. An average Google Ads click costs $5.42 in 2026 (WordStream), while Google's own economic model prices an organic click at 70% of that, about $3.79. Per programme, SEO retainers average $2,917 a month (Ahrefs, 2024) and take three to six months to pay back, so organic is cheaper over years and more expensive in the first quarter.
Does paid search convert better than organic search?
Slightly. Ruler Analytics measured a 5.4% conversion rate for paid search and 4.9% for organic search across 110 million sessions in 2026. The difference is intent: people who click an ad usually searched for something specific and commercial.
How much have AI Overviews reduced organic clicks?
Between 35% and 61% on searches where an AI Overview appears. Ahrefs found a 34.5% CTR drop at position 1 in 2025 and 58% in its 2026 rerun, Pew Research found visits with a click fell from 15% to 8% (2025), and Seer Interactive found organic CTR down 61% and paid CTR down 68% (2025). Brands cited inside the overview recover most of that loss (Seer, 2026).
What share of Google searches end without a click?
68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024, according to SparkToro's clickstream study with Similarweb.
How big is the search advertising market?
US search advertising generated $114.2 billion in 2025, up 11% (IAB / PwC, April 2026). Google's Search & other segment alone reported $224.5 billion in global revenue for 2025 (Alphabet 10-K).
